When Israel’s remnant crossed the Jordan into Canaan, they were coming back to a small region that had belonged to their ancestors since the time of Abraham. In this sense it was their inheritance; Joshua brought them home to a land they had never seen before. Coming home usually brings to our minds thoughts of comfort, good food, a sense of ease; a sense of belonging. It should mean rest. But because of their rebellion, the first generation of Israelites out of Egypt never did enjoy that rest. Nevertheless the invitation to soul’s rest and spiritual homecoming is still extended in Christ for all who will believe.
