As our alphabetical study of characters in the Bible continues, we are finding all sorts of examples – both good and bad. Both our subjects in this message had authority. One used his power selfishly, the other sacrificially. Felix was a procurator. A middle-management man for the Roman Empire. He used his little bit of power to detain the Apostle Paul in prison, hoping to be bribed for his freedom.
Gedaliah had also served as a puppet governor in Judah, some six hundred years earlier. He used his authority to lead the remnant in Jerusalem – including the prophet Jeremiah – to freedom. His trusting nature eventually cost this gracious man his life.
