“Here I stand!” These famous words, spoken by the Reformer Martin Luther to mark his refusal to recant his teachings of Scripture, have been etched in history. He stood alone in the face of pressure from the Roman Catholic Church, but he was hardly the first to stand up for what he believed. Men and women throughout history have stood tall for their beliefs in the midst of the extreme pressures of oppressive regimes. Standing alone usually means being isolated from comfort, denying the acceptance of those around you, and boldly facing the consequences that come. Let’s take a look at a number of people who understood the importance of standing alone.
