Until the time David became king over all Israel, Jerusalem had been a kind of no-man’s land, left unconquered by Joshua some four hundred years before David’s time. It was a strongly walled city even then. The Canaanite inhabitants were smug and arrogant in their citadel – “even our blind and lame could keep you out!” The Jebusites had to eat their words when their taunts were turned against them. Self-confidence is no match for God-confidence.
