The priesthood was regarded as the highest privilege in Judaism. The priests were descended from the tribe of Levi, and they – particularly the High Priests – were intercessors between man and God. No priest can make such intercession with any authority unless he is familiar with the human condition. For this reason Christ took on humanity. But for Christ (of the tribe of Judah), the priesthood was not a step up in prestige, rather a long step down. His priesthood is, by necessity, of a different order. He was after the order of Melchizedek, king-priest of Zion before there were any sons of Abraham. The intercession Christ makes for us is far above and beyond anything Aaron could have imagined.
