1 Timothy 6:20–21
On more than one occasion, Timothy was admonished to station a sentry around the strong box of the faith—the treasure vouchsafed to him (1 Timothy 6:20; 2 Timothy 1:14). He was to guard the gospel with his life. But Timothy didn’t stand this post alone—Paul and the apostles stood with him, as did all who faithfully followed their teaching, from the first century to the twenty-first century. In fact, everyone who ministers, whether as a vocation or as a volunteer, is commanded to “guard what has been entrusted” (1 Timothy 6:20); it’s an essential part of ministry.
