Pick a straw, any straw. Short or long, a straw drawn from the Epistle of James will be prickly. Straw isn’t soft like hay; straw jabs and sticks whenever you get close to it. Martin Luther cited the book of James as his authority when making his appeal for the people of God to pray fervently and to work hard at demonstrating their faith. This illustrates the genius of James. When we want to understand theology, perhaps Paul is our greatest ally. But when we want the church to act on its theology, then James is our man.
