Even though Solomon took many wives into his harem, he never advocated that this was a particularly good idea. It was a matter of political practicality to maintain stable relations with the neighbouring states. Solomon consistently taught, however, that it was best to find your delight in the bride of your youth, to be a one-woman man. The one woman who captured Solomon’s heart inspired the Song of Songs, and the Song is a work of dramatic poetry about their courtship and marriage. There is wisdom here about the importance of patience and self-control; about how the best strategies for resolving problems involve taking initiative; and about enjoying the pure delight of intimacy within marriage.
