Romans 6:15 – 23
The sixth chapter of Romans includes two questions that look alike, but they are not. In fact, each is directed to a different kind of individual.
- First: “Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase” (Romans 6:1)?
This question is directed to those who fail to claim their liberty and go on living like slaves. Such a lifestyle nullifies grace, suggesting there are no benefits derived from being liberated from sin’s power. - Second: “Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace” (6:15)?
This question is directed to those who take their liberty too far and miss the whole point of grace. Such a lifestyle abuses grace, suggesting that there are no restraints with grace.
For the first half of Romans 6, we focused on our theoretical position in Christ as we addressed what it means to be “dead to sin.” Now, let’s turn our attention to the practical outworking of living by grace as we understand what it means to be freed from slavery to sin.
