Seasoned Citizens of the Kingdom

Proverbs 1:8–9

No source of wisdom can match the timeless, infallible, inerrant Word of God. But don’t ignore the wisdom of other seasoned believers.

  1. Hear and heed the counsel of those you respect.

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction
And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;
Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head
And ornaments about your neck. (1:8–9)

While the Bible is our only source of infallible, inerrant wisdom, it is not our only source of godly counsel. God has given you godly women and men in the community of Christ’s body, the church. Seasoned Christian mentors have been through some experiences and endured some trials that you have not yet encountered. They have had time to weave their failures and successes through their study of the Scriptures, and their experience gives them a discernment and depth you may yet lack. The things they can pass along to you are “a graceful wreath” and “ornaments” of wisdom. Listen to these wise believers. Learn from them. Linger with them.
